This overhead slot above the main gate is where objects and hot liquids could be thrown down on attackers.

The upper level of the medieval gatehouse has a 15th-century piece of art painted onto the walls. Though it's now looking quite worn, it's amazing that it has survive the centuries. There's also a model of how Berry Pomeroy might have looked.

This 15th century wall painting depicts the adoration of the Magi, or as most school children will know them as, the three Wise Men coming to visit the baby Jesus. This picture is also one of the earliest showing a black wise man in England. I'm not sure where he is to be honest.

This is supposedly a haunted former dungeon that held the poor lady whose white ghost has been seen gliding around the ruins. Nice story but this was build as a defence tower and gun emplacement covering the approach to the main gate - there's no evidence that it was used as a dungeon.

The interior of St Margaret's Tower - this was used by my associates at university when we visited at night time, before English Heritage took the site over. Not sure if we were still breaking in though I don't recall anything saying 'keep out'. Barriers put up to prevent entry might have been a clue.

Athelstan's Tower was part of the castle that was built into the city walls. Exeter Castle was built on the highest part of the city and into the northern corner of the Roman city walls in 1068, following the rebellion against William the Conqueror. Of the castle itself, the gatehouse is the main remaining feature. The tower was named after the Saxon King Athelstan who significantly repaired the original Roman city wall in AD 928. This picture is taken from outside the walls, from which the formidable defences can be seen on the hill.

This area has been the centre of Exeter since Roman times. A church was established here in the 6th century and a wall was built after 1283, creating cathedral close. A number of historic buildings make Cathedral Close a must visit.

Mol's Coffee House was used as a custom house from the late 16th century and in 1726 as a coffee house run exclusively by women until 1829, hence the name today, although it has had many other uses since. A central panel is painted with the Royal Arms and was installed circa 1885. The top story features a distinctive Dutch gable of 19th century origin. St Martin's Church was built in the 15th century. The previous church dates to 1065.

These attractive buildings were constructed for the canons of the Cathedral and date from about 1500 although some parts may date back to 1450.

This medieval house of the Archdeacons of Barnstable and Totnes has the arms of Bishop Cotton (1598-1621) above the door. The oak door is said to date from 1600.
